In a significant development for personal privacy, researchers have unveiled SweepLED, an innovative and affordable smartphone attachment engineered to pinpoint concealed cameras in temporary accommodations like hotel rooms and rental properties. This prototype aims to empower travelers with a quick and reliable method to safeguard their privacy.

SweepLED integrates an LED-equipped phone case with advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms. This combination allows it to rapidly identify the unique optical signatures of camera lenses, typically completing an inspection in less than five seconds.

Hidden cameras are frequently disguised within everyday items such as clocks, power adapters, smoke detectors, portable chargers, motion sensors, and various decorative objects. Traditionally, locating these surreptitious devices has demanded expensive specialized equipment or painstaking manual searches with handheld lens finders. These conventional tools often generate false positives due to the reflective properties of common materials like glossy plastics, glass, and metals, which can mimic the appearance of a camera lens.

Revolutionizing Hidden Camera Detection

SweepLED addresses the limitations of existing detection methods by innovating the approach to light illumination during an inspection. The system features a compact array of LEDs that attaches to a smartphone case.

Unlike standard flashlights that employ a single, fixed angle of light, SweepLED’s LEDs illuminate a suspicious object from multiple angles in a carefully orchestrated sequence. Crucially, the smartphone camera remains stationary throughout this process.

As KAIST researchers report through Singapore Management University, this multi-angle illumination technique exploits the fundamental differences in how camera lenses and ordinary reflective surfaces interact with light. While glossy surfaces typically produce bright reflections that shift noticeably as the light source changes position, a camera lens generates more stable and structured reflections due to its internal components, including the lens, aperture, and image sensor assembly.

During a scan, SweepLED records a brief video as the LEDs activate in sequence. Proprietary software then stabilizes the video to compensate for any hand movement, compares frames captured with LEDs on versus off, and pinpoints small, bright regions that could indicate a lens. The system subsequently tracks these reflections across multiple frames before employing a machine-learning classifier to determine the likelihood of the object containing a hidden camera.

Performance and Affordability

The KAIST researchers rigorously tested the SweepLED prototype against 12 commercially available hidden camera devices and 18 non-camera reflective items. The system demonstrated an impressive overall detection accuracy of 93.9 percent. Specifically, it successfully identified hidden cameras in approximately 95 percent of the camera-equipped objects it examined, while maintaining a low false-positive rate of 7.2 percent on non-camera objects.

Each inspection cycle involves three distinct viewpoints, with each LED sweep lasting approximately 1.5 seconds. This results in a total scan time of roughly 4.5 seconds per object. The core electronic components required for the prototype’s construction are estimated to cost less than $7, positioning SweepLED as a highly cost-effective solution suitable for an affordable travel accessory or a privacy tool provided by hotels.

The prototype incorporates directional LEDs, a PWM controller, and an ATmega328P microcontroller. An accompanying Android application manages the LED patterns and captures video via the phone’s camera. The researchers anticipate that this design could eventually be integrated into standard phone cases or even future smartphone models.

While SweepLED represents a significant leap in hidden camera detection, it is not an infallible solution. Its performance can diminish when a lens is obscured by heavily tinted, opaque, or highly diffusive materials. Detection accuracy also decreased when scans were performed from distances exceeding 100 cm, underscoring the importance of inspecting suspicious objects at close range. Furthermore, the system is not intended to replace a thorough physical inspection or the critical step of reporting any discovered devices to hotel management and law enforcement agencies.

Nevertheless, SweepLED powerfully illustrates how a simple, sub-$7 LED attachment combined with a smartphone can transform hidden camera checks, making them faster, more accessible, and less reliant on specialized equipment for travelers concerned about their privacy.
