Microsoft Bolsters Windows Family Safety with New Age Verification and Parental Controls

Microsoft is rolling out a comprehensive update to its Windows Family Safety features, introducing robust account-based age verification, privacy-centric age signals, and enhanced parental control functionalities. These advancements are specifically engineered to enable Windows applications, games, services, and artificial intelligence experiences to deliver protections tailored to a user’s age.

At the core of this initiative is the Microsoft account, which serves as the foundational identity layer for family safety across the Windows ecosystem. Microsoft accounts will now categorize users as children, teenagers, or adults, automatically determining the applicability of parental consent or controls and recording age verification status. This centralized approach ensures that age-specific safeguards are consistently applied across Windows devices and compatible applications, eliminating the need for parents to configure restrictions individually within each app. Instead, developers can leverage Windows platform capabilities to identify the relevant age category for a particular experience.

Introducing the Windows Age API

A significant component of this rollout is the new Windows Age API. This API grants developers access to crucial age-related signals while safeguarding sensitive personal information, such as a user’s full date of birth. Microsoft emphasizes that this method aims to minimize unnecessary collection and sharing of personal data by individual applications.

The GetUserAgeRangeAsync function within the API provides applications with non-personally identifiable age bands, including groups such as under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18+. Developers can utilize these categories to dynamically adjust content, features, communication tools, purchasing options, and safety settings to suit younger users.

Microsoft is also introducing the GetAgeVerificationStatusAsync function for services that require a higher level of confirmation than a self-reported age. This API indicates whether a user has successfully completed age verification through their Microsoft account.

Furthermore, the CheckAgeStatusAsync capability extends the existing CheckUserAgeConsentGroupAsync function. This allows applications to identify whether an individual is classified as a child, minor, or adult under various global and regional policies. Microsoft has indicated that this function will be implemented in a forthcoming Windows update.

Expanding Microsoft Age Verification (MAV)

The company is also expanding Microsoft Age Verification (MAV), an account-based service that enables users to verify their age once and then utilize that verified status across numerous Microsoft products and Windows experiences. Developers can access this verified status through the Windows Age APIs. Currently, Microsoft offers age verification in its digital storefronts in Singapore, Brazil, and Australia, with plans to expand support as more countries implement regulatory requirements for online age assurance.

To further enhance user safety, Windows is increasing the visibility of parental controls during device setup. In France and other regions, families will encounter clearer parental consent and control options earlier in the onboarding process. This proactive approach is designed to assist parents in activating protective measures before children begin using a new device. Family Safety remains deeply integrated into Windows, empowering parents to manage screen time, control app access, filter content, and monitor activity reports. Recent improvements include streamlined approval workflows, more transparent activity reports, and additional management controls. The Windows Age APIs are presently accessible to Windows Insiders and are expected to be rolled out to all Windows users in the near future.

This strategic move positions Windows as a robust platform where age-aware safety controls can be seamlessly integrated directly into applications, services, and emerging AI experiences, fostering a safer digital environment for all users.
