Key Takeaways

  • A bug in Microsoft Teams desktop clients (Windows and macOS) prevents right-click pasting of content.
  • The issue stems from a code regression introduced in a recent Microsoft Edge browser update.
  • Keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+V/Cmd+V) and the Windows clipboard function normally.
  • Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and is deploying a fix via a staged rollout.

A recent update to the Microsoft Edge browser has inadvertently introduced a significant functionality bug within the Microsoft Teams desktop client, impacting users on both Windows and macOS. The issue specifically disables the right-click paste option, preventing users from inserting text, images, and URLs into the application.

Reports of the problem began surfacing on April 14, 2026, with users observing that the “Paste” option in the Teams desktop client’s context menu was greyed out. This rendered them unable to paste content copied from various applications, including the Snipping Tool, Outlook, Word, and even Microsoft Edge itself. The affected Teams desktop client version is 26072.519.4556.7438.

Crucially, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+V on Windows and Cmd+V on Mac remain fully functional, as does the Windows clipboard accessed via Windows Key + V. This confirms the problem is isolated solely to the right-click menu functionality.

Early user investigations revealed a peculiar partial workaround: modifying a URL, for instance, by removing a single character (e.g., changing https:// to ttps://), would allow the broken link to be pasted as plain text. However, complete and valid URLs continued to be blocked from the right-click paste function.

Edge Browser Regression Identified as Root Cause

On April 16, 2026, at 7:24 AM PDT, Microsoft issued a service health notification confirming that a recent update to the Microsoft Edge browser was indeed the culprit. The Teams desktop client relies on the Edge WebView2 runtime for rendering, and a code regression within this underlying browser engine update directly caused the paste functionality to break.

The Teams desktop application is built on an Electron-based framework, which integrates the Edge WebView2 runtime. This architectural dependency makes it susceptible to issues arising from regressions in the browser engine updates.

Independent verification by volunteer moderator Ruwim.B further solidified the diagnosis. The issue was reproducible in the Teams Insider build (version 26093.408.4582.3829) when logged in with a personal or Teams Free account, ruling out organizational IT administration settings or policy configurations as the cause. It is important to note that the web-based version, teams.live.com, does not exhibit this problem, with all paste options working as expected in browser sessions.

Enterprise users have confirmed that the bug affects all content types, not just URLs. Reported scenarios include:

  • Pasting images captured using the Snipping Tool.
  • Pasting text copied from external applications like Outlook and Word.
  • The bug manifesting after restarting or rebooting the system, even on builds where pasting initially appeared functional.

A critical behavioral pattern observed by users is that if Teams version 26072.519.4556.7438 initially appears to work correctly, simply closing and reopening the application or rebooting the system will trigger the right-click paste bug upon relaunch.

Microsoft’s Response and Recommended Workarounds

Microsoft has officially acknowledged the incident and stated that a fix is currently being deployed. This fix is being rolled out in stages, with active telemetry monitoring in place to confirm its effectiveness and recovery. While the deployment is ongoing, Microsoft recommends the following temporary workarounds:

  • For Windows users, utilize Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.
  • For Mac users, employ Cmd+C to copy and Cmd+V to paste.
  • To paste content as plain text, use Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or Cmd+Shift+V on Mac.
  • Users experiencing the issue are encouraged to submit feedback via Teams Settings > Feedback > Report a Problem, or for organizational impact, escalate through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Service Health.

What You Should Do

  • Until the fix is fully deployed to your Teams client, rely on keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+V for Windows, Cmd+V for Mac) for all pasting operations.
  • If you need to paste content without formatting, use Ctrl+Shift+V (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+V (Mac).
  • Enterprise IT administrators should communicate these workarounds to their end-users.
  • Organizations experiencing widespread impact are advised to file reports through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to ensure visibility with the Teams product engineering team.
