Key Takeaways

  • An exploit package is now publicly available, enabling owners of the Amazon Fire TV Cube 3 (gazelle) to unlock its bootloader and gain persistent root access.
  • The vulnerability affects devices running firmware PS7717 or older, allowing for significant system modifications, including custom ROMs and recovery.
  • While offering advanced customization, the process carries a high risk of permanently damaging the device and disables automatic firmware updates, posing a security trade-off.
  • The exploit requires physical access and enabled ADB debugging; there is no indication of unauthenticated remote attacks or malicious exploitation in the wild.

A new public exploit package allows owners of Amazon’s third-generation Fire TV Cube to achieve persistent root access and unlock the bootloader on devices running firmware PS7717 or earlier. This development opens the door for profound system alterations, previously unavailable to users.

The project, spearheaded by XDA developer Pro-me3us, specifically targets devices internally codenamed “gazelle.” It leverages a combination of temporary root access and a distinct bootloader vulnerability to facilitate deeper, more permanent modifications to the device’s operating system.

According to the official XDA development thread, the unlock process installs Magisk and TWRP recovery, grants access to restricted boot options, and supports the installation of alternative operating systems. This significantly expands the utility and flexibility of the Fire TV Cube.

However, the developer has issued a stern warning: the procedure carries a substantial risk of rendering the device permanently inoperable. Furthermore, the process automatically performs a factory reset and necessitates 1.5GB of user storage to maintain the unlocked state.

Initiating the unlock involves connecting via Android Debug Bridge (ADB) with debugging enabled and authorized on the Cube. A temporary root tool then provides the necessary permissions for the unlock script. The device subsequently reboots into TWRP to finalize the changes before returning to FireOS for initial setup.

Amazon Fire TV Cube 3 Exploit Details

The project acknowledges several researchers for their contributions. Mforce2 is credited with porting the Ghostlock exploit, identified as CVE-2026-43499, while NebuSec developed the original exploit chain. John Red discovered the critical bootloader vulnerability. Pro-me3us integrated these components into the current exploit package.

Additionally, the thread recognizes researcher Man Yue Mo’s prior work on Mali GPU vulnerabilities, specifically CVE-2022-38181 and CVE-2022-46395, as foundational for testing and information gathering. It is important to note that these are separate contributions and do not imply that every listed flaw is exploited during each unlock operation.

Once unlocked, the Fire TV Cube gains comprehensive Magisk support, TWRP backup and recovery functionalities, unrestricted fastboot access, and Amlogic download mode. Owners can also access the U-Boot command line via Ethernet and boot the device from external USB storage.

These modifications enable the use of custom launchers, altered system and vendor partitions, and custom kernels or ROMs. Related projects like CoreELEC for Kodi-based media playback and EmuELEC for retro gaming become viable, transforming the streaming device into a more adaptable platform for both testing and personalized entertainment.

Version 1.2 of the exploit, released on September 30, 2026, extends the temporary root tool’s compatibility to PS7717/5741 firmware, updates Magisk to version 30.7, and includes a local ADB fix. This version also clears the misc partition during the unlock process to mitigate issues arising from firmware updates downloaded prior to the procedure.

The published method requires pre-existing, authorized ADB access on the device. It is not presented as an unauthenticated remote attack, and the associated XDA thread contains no reports of malicious exploitation in the wild.

Users are explicitly warned against modifying the logo partition, which is crucial for maintaining the unlock, or re-running the bootloader unlock script. Executing the temporary root tool twice within a single boot cycle can also lead to a crash and restart of the Cube.

A significant consequence of this unlock is the disabling of automatic firmware updates, creating a security trade-off for users who opt to keep their device unlocked. While unrelated to this specific exploit, past research into Samsung boot-chain vulnerabilities underscores how control at levels below Android can have profound and lasting security implications.

What You Should Do

  • Understand the Risks: Be fully aware that this process can permanently damage your device and voids your warranty.
  • Backup Data: Before attempting any modifications, back up all critical data from your Amazon Fire TV Cube.
  • Verify Firmware: Confirm the exact model and firmware version of your device to ensure compatibility with the exploit.
  • Proceed with Caution: For most everyday users, maintaining automatic firmware updates is the safer choice to ensure ongoing security and device stability.
  • Follow Instructions Precisely: If you decide to proceed, meticulously follow the instructions provided by the developer to minimize the risk of errors.
