For the first time, an artificial intelligence model, dubbed Claude Mythos, has been documented completing an entire cyber kill chain without requiring step-by-step human guidance. This significant development, detailed in a controlled test environment, underscores the accelerating pace of autonomous offensive AI capabilities, though it does not represent an actual malware deployment or a confirmed breach against a real victim.

The primary concern arising from this demonstration is the sheer speed at which such an autonomous system can operate. Claude Mythos successfully executed every stage of a simulated attack: identifying system vulnerabilities, gaining initial access to a defended enterprise network, exfiltrating credentials, escalating its privileges, performing lateral movement across multiple systems, and ultimately achieving full domain administrator control. These are precisely the stages that human defenders strive to detect and disrupt during an active intrusion.

While the name “Claude Mythos” appears in GitHub projects and discussions, this finding is the result of an assessment by Booz Allen of autonomous AI models, serving as a benchmark rather than an indication of an active, independent AI attacking organizations.

Booz Allen’s Assessment of AI Models

In a detailed report, Booz Allen tested 18 different AI models, both U.S. and Chinese, as autonomous attackers against a production-grade enterprise network. Instead of relying on the models’ self-reported actions, researchers meticulously measured their activities using network and host telemetry. The Cyber Weapon Index assigned Claude Mythos a score of 80, reflecting a 74 for vulnerability research and an 86 for kill-chain attainment.

Claude Mythos was the sole model among those tested to achieve the ultimate objective of full compromise. Researchers noted its consistent ability to escalate from a compromised employee credential to administrator-level control in every instance where it began with credentials. More impressively, in scenarios without initial credentials, the report indicates that Claude Mythos successfully penetrated the network from an external position and independently devised a method to elevate its access, demonstrating adaptive rather than pre-programmed behavior.

This autonomous AI agent breach highlights a concerning capability: the ability of AI to independently discover vulnerabilities in compiled software without access to its source code. In this specific test, only frontier Anthropic models could identify the previously unknown flaw, and only Claude Mythos reportedly exploited it. It’s crucial to remember that this result is from a defined, controlled environment and does not guarantee universal performance.

While Claude Mythos stood out, other models also demonstrated significant progress in various stages of the kill chain. Four models achieved domain access and control, four managed lateral movement, and two successfully performed credential access. Notably, all but one model autonomously penetrated the network. This indicates that even partial autonomous capabilities can significantly aid human attackers or cause disruption.
