Microsoft has announced the deprecation of its “Together Mode” feature within Microsoft Teams, a strategic shift intended to boost performance and simplify the virtual meeting experience for users. The decision to phase out Together Mode, according to Microsoft, stems from a desire to streamline meeting layouts and dedicate resources to core performance enhancements. While Together Mode initially offered a simulated shared environment for participants, the evolution of Teams’ “Gallery view” has rendered the specialized feature less critical. The updated Gallery view now supports up to 49 participants simultaneously, providing a flexible and adaptive layout that adjusts based on individual device capabilities and network conditions.

Retirement of Together Mode Components

These include the toggle for Together Mode in the meeting interface, the discontinuation of both pre-built and custom “scenes” (including seat assignments), and the elimination of layout-specific customization options previously associated with Together Mode. Organizations that utilized branded scenes for visual identity will need to transition to organization-provided backgrounds, which can be managed via the Teams Admin Center.

Microsoft Teams Product Manager Katarina Tranker stated that Together Mode will be retired gradually across platforms, adhering to Microsoft’s safe deployment practices. Users enrolled in the Targeted Release and Public Preview channels may experience this change prior to its general availability. Microsoft advises organizations to monitor the Microsoft 365 Message Center for platform-specific rollout timelines and to prepare their users for the upcoming transition.
