Microsoft Unveils Always-On AI Agent Scout for Teams and Outlook

Microsoft has officially introduced Scout, an innovative “Autopilot” AI agent that marks a significant evolution in artificial intelligence integration within enterprise environments. Unlike conventional AI assistants, Scout operates continuously in the background across Microsoft 365 applications, proactively addressing tasks and managing information without requiring explicit user commands.

Unveiled at Microsoft Build 2026 on June 2, Scout signifies Microsoft’s commitment to a new class of AI agents that are persistent, autonomous, and deeply integrated into daily workflows. These “Autopilots” are designed to act on behalf of users, monitoring signals, responding to triggers, and resuming tasks seamlessly.

The Autopilot Paradigm Shift

Scout is the first of what Microsoft terms “Autopilots”—identity-bearing AI systems that are always active and capable of autonomous action. This paradigm differs fundamentally from existing AI tools, which typically await user queries. Autopilots, conversely, maintain an active presence, continually learning and adapting within a user’s digital ecosystem. Microsoft has indicated that Scout is merely the first in a planned series of such agents.

Deep Integration Across Microsoft 365

Scout is engineered for native integration throughout the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, establishing connections with critical applications such as Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint. It also taps into underlying data layers including chat histories, emails, calendar entries, and contacts. While primary user interaction occurs through Teams, a dedicated desktop application extends Scout’s capabilities to web browsers, local system resources, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.

The agent leverages OpenClaw open-source technology alongside Microsoft’s proprietary Work IQ layer. Work IQ is crucial for Scout’s ability to develop a persistent understanding of a user’s work habits, priorities, and impending tasks. This continuous learning process enables Scout to become increasingly effective and relevant over time within an individual’s operational environment.

Key Autonomous Capabilities

Scout’s autonomous functions include a range of proactive tasks designed to enhance productivity:

  • Facilitating and coordinating meetings across diverse time zones.
  • Identifying and flagging high-priority meetings, then generating necessary preparatory materials.
  • Automatically blocking calendar time to accommodate identified deliverables.
  • Proactively surfacing potential risks, such as stalled decisions, before they escalate into significant impediments.

Enterprise-Grade Security and Compliance

From a security standpoint, Microsoft Scout has been architected with robust enterprise-grade identity and access controls, setting it apart from consumer-oriented AI tools. Each instance of Scout operates under its own distinct Microsoft Entra identity, ensuring that all actions taken by the agent are attributable to a known and managed entity within the directory, rather than a generic or anonymous service account.

Credential protection is rigorously enforced, with credentials scoped precisely to the task at hand, redacted from all logs and diagnostics, and managed in accordance with Microsoft’s stringent first-party service standards. Sensitive operations require explicit human approval before execution. Furthermore, Microsoft Purview policies, including sensitivity labels and data loss prevention (DLP) rules, are applied in real time to prevent unauthorized data transmission or writing.

Microsoft is also contributing Scout’s policy conformance capabilities upstream to the OpenClaw open-source community. This allows organizations independently utilizing OpenClaw to validate their environments against security and compliance requirements, providing audit-ready verification.

Availability and Future Rollout

Microsoft Scout is currently in private preview, accessible only to a select group of Frontier program customers and Microsoft employees who have been involved in internal piloting. Access requirements include Frontier program enrollment, Intune policy configuration, an opt-in attestation, and a valid GitHub Copilot Business or Enterprise license.

Comprehensive setup documentation is available via Microsoft Learn. While broader availability details are yet to be announced, Microsoft has confirmed that all Microsoft 365 subscribers will eventually be eligible for Frontier access.
