This aggregation of data could potentially allow for precise mapping of a household’s connected environment and location-adjacent triangulation.

Perhaps the most concerning allegation involves audio recording. Researchers claim the LG TVs captured discernible microphone audio while the screens were off. This activity reportedly persisted even when the Ethernet cable was physically disconnected from the device. According to the findings, this recorded audio was stored locally on the television and automatically uploaded to LG’s advertising infrastructure, specifically through LG Ad Solutions, as soon as network connectivity was restored.

This contradicts previous public statements from LG, which asserted that its televisions “do not collect, record, or store ambient conversations.” The Gamers Nexus team’s testing, detailed in their video investigation, purports to show on-device transcription of spoken prompts into plain-text logs, rather than merely raw ambient recordings. One clinician reviewing these findings reportedly expressed apprehension regarding the implications for patient confidentiality in medical settings where LG panels might be present during sensitive discussions. LG Ad Solutions openly promotes ACR as a mechanism to provide advertisers with “glass-level” viewing data across all inputs, a program that has reportedly scaled to approximately 33 million opted-in sets in the United States, further expanded through collaborations with Nielsen for national audience measurement.
