Boston Scientific, a leading medical device manufacturer, is currently investigating a significant cybersecurity incident that has disrupted various facets of its global operations, impacting manufacturing processes, order fulfillment, and product distribution. The company first detected the breach on August 25, 2026, which led to an outage across specific internal information technology systems and critical business applications.

In response to the incident, Boston Scientific has enlisted the expertise of third-party cybersecurity firms, including CrowdStrike, to aid in the investigation, containment, and recovery efforts. As of the latest update issued on August 30 at 8:25 p.m. ET, the company has reported no indications of further unauthorized activity within its environment since the initial detection.

The ongoing investigation has determined that the incident is isolated to certain on-premises systems. Crucially, the company’s cloud-based infrastructure and applications remain unaffected. This distinction is vital, suggesting that the disruption targets localized enterprise infrastructure rather than a broader compromise of its cloud environment.

The affected systems support operational technology functions and business applications essential for manufacturing products, processing customer orders, and shipping medical devices. This has created bottlenecks in the supply chain for critical medical equipment.

Operational Disruptions and Patient Care Considerations

Despite the challenges, customers can still submit orders electronically via electronic data interchange (EDI) and local applications. However, these orders are being placed into a fulfillment queue, awaiting the restoration of processing and shipping services. Boston Scientific is actively working towards a partial resumption of shipping for select products within the week following the August 30 update. Full ordering and shipping capabilities will be reinstated once the company has validated the complete operational integrity of its restored systems.

The incident has understandably raised concerns among hospitals, clinicians, suppliers, and patients who rely on Boston Scientific products. The company has clarified that there is no known impact on devices not connected to a Boston Scientific network, nor has it affected clinicians’ ability to use disconnected devices. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that the incident has heightened cybersecurity risks to hospital networks through Boston Scientific medical devices.

Boston Scientific also provided an update regarding its Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) device portfolio, which includes implantable cardiac devices such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, subcutaneous ICDs, and insertable cardiac monitors. The company affirmed that existing remotely monitored CRM devices continue to function, and remote patient monitoring for devices enrolled prior to the outage remains operational. Programmer interrogations are also unaffected.

The company has found no evidence that the incident has disrupted the transfer of CRM monitoring data to electronic medical record systems. However, new remote monitoring activations are currently impacted. New communicators for recently implanted CRM devices cannot be activated at this time, leading to delays in transmitting device data to remote patient management systems. Similarly, newly implanted insertable cardiac monitors can still record episodes after activation through the Boston Scientific Clinic Assistant app, but they cannot pair with patient mobile phones for remote transmission until systems are fully restored.

Boston Scientific has stated its commitment to prioritizing the restoration of systems that have the most significant impact on customer access, product delivery, and patient care. The company has not yet disclosed details regarding the threat actor, the specific attack method used, whether data theft occurred, ransomware involvement, or a definitive timeline for full recovery.
