Key Takeaways

  • An open-source tool called RemoveMacAI allows Mac users to disable Apple Intelligence features and reclaim significant storage space.
  • The utility removes downloaded AI models, freeing approximately 10GB to 12GB of disk space.
  • RemoveMacAI operates without compromising macOS System Integrity Protection and its changes are reversible.
  • The tool addresses a change in macOS 27 where a single toggle for Apple Intelligence was removed, leaving models on disk even if features are disabled.

A new open-source utility, RemoveMacAI, offers macOS users a method to disable Apple Intelligence, eliminate its associated downloaded models, and prevent future downloads. This tool can free up a substantial amount of storage, typically between 10GB and 12GB, depending on the specific models installed on the system. The modifications made by RemoveMacAI are fully reversible, and critically, the process maintains macOS System Integrity Protection (SIP).

The developer of RemoveMacAI created the tool to address a particular storage management issue introduced in macOS 27. Previously, users could disable Apple Intelligence with a single switch. However, in the updated macOS version, this option was removed. Consequently, even if individual Apple Intelligence features are turned off, their corresponding models remain on the user’s hard drive, consuming valuable space. RemoveMacAI streamlines the process by consolidating feature restrictions, model removal, and download blocking into a single command-line operation.

RemoveMacAI’s Mechanism for Model Removal

As detailed in the RemoveMacAI GitHub repository, the tool functions by installing a configuration profile. This profile leverages Apple’s own restriction keys to manage settings. For any settings lacking a direct restriction key, the tool enforces the necessary values. Users must explicitly approve this profile within System Settings for the changes to become active.

It is important to note that RemoveMacAI does not directly delete protected system files. Instead, it removes the AI models through Apple’s official asset service. This approach means the tool avoids direct modification of files within the /System directory and does not require users to disable System Integrity Protection, a crucial security feature of macOS.

To prevent the re-downloading of removed models, the installed configuration profile redirects download requests for these assets to a closed local port. This effectively blocks macOS from fetching them again without disabling general internet access for other applications or services.

The assets targeted for removal include Apple’s foundational AI models, models for image generation and Genmoji, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up, and Xcode code completion models. However, users should be aware that reclaimed disk space might not appear instantly. While Apple’s asset service releases the models immediately, macOS handles the actual file deletion on its own schedule. Therefore, storage settings might continue to report the models until this background cleanup process is complete.

Installation and Usage

Users can install RemoveMacAI via Homebrew using the command brew install omlahore/tap/removemacai, followed by executing removemacai. The tool will then display its current status and prompt for confirmation before guiding the user to System Settings for profile approval. It requires Apple silicon and is not compatible with macOS 26 or earlier versions. Users running macOS 27.0.1 need version 0.2.3 or newer of the tool.

An alternative one-line installer is also available, which downloads the latest release, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and runs the program from a temporary directory without requiring a permanent installation. All releases feature GitHub build provenance attestations, allowing users to verify the authenticity of downloaded releases. For instance, the command gh attestation verify removemacai-darwin-arm64.tar.gz -R omlahore/RemoveMacAI can be used to confirm that a downloaded release originated from the official repository.

Before applying any changes, users can run removemacai status to view the current feature states and model sizes. A dry run of the operation can be previewed with removemacai off --dry-run. Specific features can be retained using the --keep option, and previous settings can be restored with removemacai revert. Simply removing the installed profile will allow macOS to download the models again if needed. The developer emphasizes that the utility does not collect any data or initiate network requests itself.

Disabling Apple Intelligence via RemoveMacAI will impact several features, including Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, summaries, smart replies, and other supported AI capabilities. Applications relying on Apple’s Foundation Models framework and certain Shortcuts actions will also lose access. Dictation, however, remains unaffected as its speech models are managed separately.

In a related development, Apple announced enhanced Full Disk Access controls on October 2, issuing a warning that AI agents could potentially expose sensitive user data such as files, mail, messages, and browsing history. This announcement followed earlier disputed claims regarding Meta’s Muse allegedly accessing private messages. It is important to distinguish that removing Apple Intelligence models does not revoke permissions granted to separate AI applications; storage management and app access remain distinct security considerations.

What You Should Do

  • Assess Your Needs: Determine if the storage savings and privacy implications outweigh the benefits of Apple Intelligence features for your workflow.
  • Backup Your System: Before making any significant system changes, always ensure you have a current backup of your macOS device.
  • Understand the Impact: Be aware that disabling Apple Intelligence will disable several integrated features, including Siri, Writing Tools, and Genmoji.
  • Verify the Tool: If using the one-line installer, utilize the GitHub build provenance attestations to verify the integrity and authenticity of the downloaded release.
  • Monitor Storage: After running RemoveMacAI, be patient as macOS may take some time to reflect the reclaimed storage space in system reports.
