Root-Level File Write Vulnerability Disclosed in macOS CUPS

A significant vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-39875, has been revealed in the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) on macOS, potentially allowing local attackers to write arbitrary files with root privileges. A public proof-of-concept (PoC) for this flaw has been made available, demonstrating how an unprivileged local user can exploit the system.

Technical Details of the CUPS Vulnerability

The vulnerability impacts macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe versions that predate macOS 14.8.8, 15.7.8, and 26.6, respectively. Security researcher Dallas Dubs published the PoC, which illustrates how two distinct logic flaws within the privileged cupsd printing daemon can be chained to facilitate the attack.

While the published PoC primarily showcases an arbitrary file write capability with root privileges rather than a full interactive root shell, this functionality is a potent primitive for local privilege escalation. The specific impact depends heavily on which files an attacker targets and the overall system configuration.

The attack chain begins with a local attacker registering a malicious printer. During the subsequent printer probing phase, the attacker can intercept and steal a valid CUPS authentication token. This token is then replayed to register a second, attacker-controlled printer. This second printer is configured with a file:// device URI, pointing to a local path chosen by the attacker that is not safeguarded by System Integrity Protection (SIP).

A critical aspect of this flaw is that CUPS may initiate root-privileged file operations before the associated authentication validation process is fully completed. In the final stage of the attack, the perpetrator submits a print job containing controlled data to the malicious printer. The cupsd daemon then writes this supplied content to the specified location with root privileges.

PoC Demonstrations and Impact

According to the PoC documentation on GitHub, the exploit requires no user interaction after its initial execution and has been successfully reproduced on vulnerable macOS versions. The public repository includes demonstrations against macOS Tahoe 26.4.1, macOS Sequoia 15.7.5, and macOS Sonoma 14.8.5.

The developer clarified that while the script verifies the creation of a file with root ownership, it does not directly offer a complete privilege escalation mechanism. However, an arbitrary root file write is considered a high-impact primitive. An attacker who has already gained access to a standard local account could exploit this condition to modify critical system files, such as insecurely handled configuration files, scheduled task definitions, application support files, or other writable locations.

The practical implications of this vulnerability will vary based on SIP restrictions, existing file permissions, endpoint security controls, and the availability of a suitable target file that can be manipulated to achieve persistent root-level code execution.
