The company has officially rebranded the Microsoft 365 app as the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, rolling out this change across all major platforms, including Windows, Android, iOS, and the web. This rebranding effort, which commenced on January 15, 2025, underscores Microsoft’s ambition to position Copilot as the core of its productivity offerings.

Accompanying this change, the primary web address for the application has shifted to m365.cloud.Microsoft, with older domains such as office.com and microsoft365.com now automatically redirecting users to the new location.

Unified Access and Functionality

For end-users, the new Microsoft 365 Copilot app centralizes access to a wide array of tools and content. This includes familiar applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, alongside PDF support, cloud file management, Copilot Chat, and various AI agents—all accessible from a single interface.

Microsoft characterizes this consolidated application as a primary hub for content discovery, creation, sharing, and collaborative efforts across both professional and personal domains. It supports direct file uploads, AI-driven content generation, seamless file access, and the utilization of custom AI agents.

The standalone consumer-focused Microsoft Copilot app is also undergoing a refresh. Users logging in with personal Microsoft, Google, or Apple accounts will transition to an updated Copilot experience. Their existing chats, generated images, and most other created content will be migrated to the enhanced application. Microsoft says that users who previously maintained both the standalone Copilot app and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app with a personal account will find their content merged into this singular, updated environment.

Maintaining Data Segregation and Security

Despite the consolidation into a single application, Microsoft emphasizes that a strict separation between work and personal data will be maintained. Personal Microsoft accounts and organizational accounts managed via Microsoft Entra are designed to operate independently. This architecture ensures that enterprise-level security controls, compliance regulations, commercial data boundaries, and tenant administration policies continue to govern when employees utilize Copilot with their organizational credentials.

This data segregation is a critical aspect for cybersecurity and compliance professionals. While a unified interface can simplify adoption and user experience, it simultaneously heightens the need for organizations to diligently monitor identity switching, data classification, file-sharing controls, and user comprehension of account boundaries.

Users will retain the ability to access both personal and enterprise Copilot functionalities within the same application, yet Microsoft assures that data from one account type will not cross over into the other. The updated app facilitates direct transitions from AI chat into Microsoft 365 applications and associated content, allowing users to connect email, calendars, cloud storage, files, and other productivity tools to provide Copilot with richer context.

Microsoft 365 subscribers benefit from elevated AI usage limits, access to more advanced models, and specialized agents for complex tasks. Free users, however, will still have access to core chat functionalities, image creation, and file uploads within specified capacity limits.

Retirement of Certain Features

As part of this transition, Microsoft is phasing out several consumer Copilot features. Group Chat, Podcasts, and Deep Research functionalities are scheduled for retirement beginning August 18, 2026. Group Chats will subsequently convert into individual Copilot conversations, which may result in the inaccessibility of content previously created by other participants. Users are advised to download any shared media before this transition date.
